The farmhouse design look is very popular now, and we are implementing some of these features in many of the remodeling projects we are doing in the greater Lake Norman communities. So, what is “farmhouse”? First, you will note the casual look and square edges – similar to Craftsman style in many ways. This has been made very popular by Joanna Gaines on the HGTV Fixer Upper shows. It is bringing the rustic barn type material into the interior. With the chic modern version of farmhouse, all of the interior doors and trim will have square interior trim such as 1″ x 4″. The wainscotting will also be square as shown in the photos below:

The kitchen may have a single, large sink-perhaps with an apron front. We have used shiplap or nickel gap planks for walls and ceilings, most often painted white. Barn doors in many styles, again with square styles and trim with exposed hardware.
The interior decorating expands the farmhouse chic theme. Again you will find items that were previously used outside – such as ladders, doors, shutters, barrels, etc. – brought inside and used in different ways. The furniture might have a plank look and may be stained or painted, allowing the aged or distressed components to show through.
This style is all-American hand-crafted look. If you want a farmhouse chic look in your home, you may want to start with just a few simple touches. Too much might be too much.
