The right lighting is necessary to accomplish certain tasks throughout the home. From cooking in the kitchen to reading in front of the fireplace or shaving in the bathroom, specific task lighting will help get the job done with ease. But in addition to its function, light fixtures can also provide style and set the mood of the home.

Some popular lighting trends include various metals, wood and glass. Light fixtures should complement the other furnishings and décor of the home – that is not to say the metal of the lighting needs to exactly match the metal of the plumbing fixtures. If a home has contemporary lines, handles and other finishes, lights with clean and simple lines will fit right in. Conversely, those contemporary lights would look out of place in a craftsman style home.

Glass globes (or a cluster of globes) are hot right now whether clear, crackled, antique glass or colored – they create an open and airy feel. Our clients of late have chosen clear globes with exposed bulbs for wall fixtures as well as pendants.

Black – or even a mixture of warm aged brass with other cool metals – is replacing the all-silver metal in light fixtures. In the farmhouse chic environment, we are also seeing stylish weathered woods with metals for a more vintage look.

Want to make a statement? A sampling of bold colors can be incorporated as well as some sparkling crystals. Remember when you choose something fun, it still needs to serve its purpose. One of our clients has a whimsical dining room chandelier that works great for intimate dinners but is not practical at all for reading or showing a photo on your phone.

“Lighting is the jewelry of your home so it can have a great impact on your entire space”, said Lauren Watts, lighting consulting, LightStyles
